Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What is quilling?

Answer: Quilling is done by rolling thin strips of paper around a needle and placing them to make designs. It is a beautiful and unique way to showcase your most important keepsakes. Take an old photo of a loved one, for example. Frame it and hang it on your wall and it fades in with your other photos…but have the mat embellished with quillwork, such as the items in our gallery, and your photo becomes an appealing centerpiece that you, as well as your visitors, can’t help but notice!

Question: I have a specific question, but I don't want to wait 24 hours for an email reply. Can you help me?

Question: What other things can I embellish with quilling besides scrapbooks and cards?

Answer: You can do tons of stuff with your quilling! For example: you can put quilling on mats for pictures; make three dimensional free standing projects like dolls and plants (which can be kept in mini display cases similar to those used for model cars); coasters will soon be available through Blueberry Lane, which have a recessed area for quilling and snap together to prevent damage to artwork; watches are available on the internet that you can apply quillwork to; you can embellish cakes with quilled flowers; create centerpieces for your dining room table or mantle; make special gift tags for Christmas; create placeholders for weddings or dinner parties; personalize the cover of a blank journal book; or you can even use quilling to accent different aspects of a favorite scenic picture, such as the roofs or windows of homes in a cityscape. You're only limited by your imagination!

Question: What kind of paper is quilling paper cut from?

Answer: Quilling paper can be cut from many different types of paper. Most companies carry quilling strips that are cut from paper sheets which weigh about 65lb to 80lb text weight. Others cut their strips from 65lb to 85lb cover or cardstock. If you plan to cut your own strips, make sure the paper you choose is archival grade (ie. acid free, lignin free, etc), and not too thick that it buckles or splits instead of curling smoothly.
